the hunger games.

Another reason for the slack in my writing is because I have consumed my spare time with reading:

The Hunger Games.

For those of you who do not know what this is, I suggest you go to a book store or call up a friend
and get your hands on a copy of this trilogy.
By far, some of the most amazing books I have read, to date.
I read the first one this summer and had no idea that it was a series.
Suddenly, the books became an over night sensation and a movie was being created for the series.
I bought the second two books and have been reading them as much as I am able.
I am currently half way through the third book.

I suggest everyone read these books, you will not be disappointed.

The gist of the story goes: it's a story of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen. She lives in the country, Panem, which is located where North America is currently.  There is a central government called the Capitol and twelve districts that lay outside of there. Long ago, the districts rebelled against the Capitol but the Capitol managed to remain in control. As punishment for their crimes, each year there is a televised event called "The Hunger Games." During this 'game' there is one female and one male from each of the districts chosen at random to go into a battlefield and fight to the death. The story follows Katniss and her journey to and through the Hunger Games.

Honestly, I was a little sad to see that there was a movie being made for the books.
I am the kind of person who, when i read a book, wants to create the characters and land for myself.
I don't want someone else to tell me what the characters look like, talk like, act like.
It's for my imagination.
And often times I feel like movies ruin books. :/
Hopefully this will not be the case for these three phenomenal books.
In case you wanted to get a sneak peak at the movie, I'll post the trailer below.

:) but make sure you read the books before you see the movie!

My the odds be ever in your favor.

slacking.

I have been a complete slacker when it comes to my blog, lately.  :(
My last and final semester of college started last Tuesday!!
It still cannot be real. I feel like I am just a baby who just graduated high school.
They always said these four years would fly by, but no one warned me it would go this fast!!
I am pretty happy with my class schedule. 5 classes right in a row. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
So far they have flown right by.
My two favorite classes so far are magazine writing & photojournalism.
I enjoy these the most because I like the idea of writing for a magazine rather than a newspaper.
But ultimately, I would love to be a photojournalist.
I love the idea of being behind a camera, being the eyes to a foreign land
for those who cannot see it themselves.

On my first day of class one of my professors put this on the board:

"The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come to you, care for them.
And learn to give them away where they are needed.
Sometimes, a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.
That is why we put these stories in each other's memory.
This is how people care for themselves." - Barry Lopez; Crow & Weasel

Make of it what you will, I found it inspring.
It really re-enforced my dreams and what I want to do with my life come May.

I am also getting very excited for my girls at SMDA (the studio i work at) to have their first performance on Saturday. All season they and I have been working hard, learning and perfecting their routines and I couldn't be more excited to show them off this weekend.
Fingers crossed they will do great, as I know they can.

More later.

over the weekend..

this past weekend was the final weekend before classes resumed at the University.

for me, it was without a doubt lived up.
(photos from iphone)

Friday: a large group of friends and i attended the infamous First Ave for an event called Bomp.
there, we danced the night away to the bright flashing lights and techno influenced music.

Saturday: Red Bull Crashed Ice even in St. Paul.
Conveniently, mother earth decided to bless us with a ton of snow on Saturday and some even better freezing weather. Kelli and I head over to St. Paul for the Red Bull Crashed Ice competition. It was this intense skating competition where people looked like they were trying to kill themselves. It was a lot of fun, despite standing in the freezing cold for 5 hours.
We didn't have a favorite athlete we just cheered for all the American's. hehe ;)

The Weinery.

in an attempt to be as active as possible during the last few days of break
and our last semester at the U-
devon, kelli, and i decided to begin a new adventure called
#DiscoverMinneapolis.

Our plan is each week to go to someplace that we have never been before.
restaurant, bar, park, museum, etc. whatever!
we just want to make sure we are emerging ourselves in as much Minneapolis lovin' as possible.

Thursday- The Weinery; located on West Bank in Minneapolis. Had the most amazing breakfast!
As you can guess by it's name, it's known for it's hotdogs- but the breakfast was phenomenal.
It was a cute little restaurant that reminded me of the old drug store i worked at in high school.
The place gave me a very small town vibe. I loved it!
Tip: Cash Only!
